The initial instance of the new JN.1 variant of COVID-19 has been identified in India. Union Health Secretary, in a communication to states/UTs, emphasized the necessity for sustained vigilance in monitoring the COVID-19 situation nationwide. He highlighted the safety achieved through collaborative efforts between central and state governments. States are now urged to enforce strict adherence to detailed operational guidelines for an enhanced surveillance strategy against COVID-19. The first case of the JN.1 variant has been confirmed in the state of Kerala.
