Varun Saikia is a 12-year-old student from Navarachana School who developed a device for cleaning water bodies. The prodigal child was deeply affected by the global environmental problems of plastic waste polluting the water bodies. He said that almost all the countries of the world are battling to get rid of the plastic waste. There are animals which are getting harmed and killed due to its consumption. He was shocked by the death of a pilot whale in Thailand which affected him to develop a device for cleaning. Varun created 'Makara', a device for sweeping the polluted ponds of the city. The machine is completely battery-operated that would reduce the manual work involved in cleaning. He was highly inclined towards making the planet cleaner and a bit greener so he kept on reading and researching about the increasing environmental hazards of plastic and its adverse effect. He learnt about the Great Pacific Garbage Patch which distressed him to an extent that resulted in him making Maka
