So much was the love for the environment of our Kings HH Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III & HH Maharaja Pratapsinhrao Gaekwad that they named their kingdom after a wonderful tree. Not only that during their rule which combinedly was of 75 years, they had a strict law of compulsory tree plantation campaigns during Monsoon season. The number of trees to be planted were linked to the population census conducted every year. For every new male child, each village head had to plant 5 tree saplings an for every girl child 3 saplings. These saplings were of huge shade-providing trees like banyan, peepal, neem etc. The logic behind the numbers is as beautiful as the cause. 3 trees for each child were compulsory but 2 extra for male child were the wood for their cremation ceremony. H.H believed in planning for the future by providing contingencies even after death! The results were astounding.
