The Department of Ear, Nose, and Throat Diseases of Sayaji Hospital uses a device called a microdebrider to treat almost every patient for mucormycosis. The manufacturer of the microdebrider patented the machine in 1969 and at one time it was used to remove tumors around the auditory canal and for orthopedic procedures. It has been used daily for nasal and endoscopic sinus surgery around the world since 1990 and is currently proving to be a very helpful tool in the recovery of patients with mucormycosis. Medical Superintendent Dr. Ranjan Aiyar said that the blades used in the machine are relatively expensive but efforts are being made to get more such machines as its treatment is beneficial for patients and discussions are underway with an organization for its charity.
